New State Law Regarding Cell Phones goes into Effect January 1, 2010

Two new state laws will go into affect on January 1, 2010 that regulate the use of cell phones while driving.

The legislation, meant to discourage distracted driving, prohibits the use of an electronic communication device to compose, send or read an electronic message (e-mail, text message, instant message or internet search) while operating a motor vehicle.

The legislation also prohibits the use of wireless telephones at any time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway, in a school speed zone, or on a highway in a construction or maintenance speed zone. Drivers under the age of 19 have been restricted from using a wireless telephone at any time while operating a motor vehicle since 2008.

For more information regarding the laws, please visit the Illinois Secretary of State website at www.cyberdriveillinois.com or contact the La Grange Police Department at (708) 579-2333.
